British upper class

I'm working on a story about the purebloods, but the class system confuses me, so I apologize for the dizzying number of questions in advance. :)

1. How are the British and the American old money families different (or is there no difference at all)?
2. Besides feeling superior to everyone else (or so I've read), what are their values, priorities, and ambitions? Is that last one even possible, considering that they grew up knowing they're the top of the social ladder already? In what ways do they see themselves as superior (breeding and family history, right?), and how do they show this superiority, if they even do this at all? How do they see themselves, their class, and the other classes (e.g. do they like the middle class better than the working class?)?
3. What kind of manners do they have? How do they act around their peers and people from the lower classes?
4. Gender roles? What is expected of an upper class woman? Is a career-driven and ambitious upper class woman unlikely?
5. What are their sources of income? What jobs would they have?
6. How big do their families tend to be? Two, three kids? One main line with a few branch families? How important is marriage and procreation for them? Is it all right for younger siblings to stay single when the older one/s get married and have kids?
7. For untitled families, how is the headship passed on? The most senior member of the family is head until he dies, which means the youngest child of the oldest generation can be head?
8. Besides the royal favorites (unless they aren't), what names are considered posh?

As others have said, it's difficult to explain the English class system (let alone the Scottish and Welsh ones) to a non-native. However, if you're writing a story about he Blacks it would be worth your while reading up on the Mitford Sisters - who are the models for the Black sisters (it should be obvious from a good biography who is which). And the Dukes of Devonshire (prior and post the advent of Deborah Mitford).
Now, now, suggesting that Bellatrix and Narcissa are modelled on Unity and Diana is a vicious slur on the Death Eaters!
*Grin* But the parallels, even to imprisonment without trial, are such fun to play with.
omfg! I missed that entirely, which is weird because I'm a huge Jessica Mitford fan. I see those characters in an entirely different light now!
How funny! I was going to make a comment about The Sisters, which I read this summer to illustrate a non-rich title family.

Oh my word, Unity and Diana and dear Voldemort Adolph!!
I'm deeply taken by the idea and have started a community to discuss this in loving detail! It's mitfords-hp on dreamwidth. You can join with your lj as an openid, or I will get you a dreamwidth invitation.

If people hate dreamwidth, please say and I'll move it back to LJ. I'm just seduced by no advertising.
I have a DW account - will look at that (useful for discussion of British 'pureblood' culture generally).
Unsurprisingly JKR is a huge Jessica Mitford fan - and wrote the intro to 'The Mitfords: Letters Between Six Sisters' (which I am currently mining for plots...)
I know - I missed it too, and I'm a huge Mitford fan (Nancy, particularly).... ah well...

I don't think I know about dreamwidth? I don't see ads on LJ as I use Firefox with an ad-blocker.

Ha! I did not know that. So that would make Lucius Oswald Moseley...
I think it makes Rodolphus Lestrange Oswald Moseley. And Malfoy Manor Chatsworth House...
